Why I Wrote the Academically Adrift Letter to the Editor

I wrote this piece to the Daily Collegian for a couple of different reasons. First, It is an article about college students so I thought it would be relevant for all students at the University and most people I feel read the Daily Collegian here at Umass. Second, I wrote the article because I thought it was interesting and it involved my life.

Here is a little commentary on the article. I want to say that here at Umass I am impressed with the amount of students who put in a tremendous amount of effort into their work and are working hard to achieve their goals. With that said I wrote the article because I believe it is true, we all know students who are intelligent but lack drive which leads to a poor work ethic. The article (NPR Academically Adrift) has proven facts that college students these days are working less and not always learning a whole lot in college. I also wrote this article because as a college student with the work force approaching my future and thousands of others, it is important to realize that, we are graduating into a poor economy and with out hard work we may not achieve what we want. I agree with the article and I was one of the students who lacked effort and sometimes still do, but it is becoming more evident to me that there is always someone out there working harder than you that wants to beat you out for that job. If I put a good effort into my education and come out and can't find a job I want it to be for another reason other than someone out worked me and took that job because I missed my opportunity.
