Viral Video

When the question was asked to find a Youtube video that just went viral, the UCLA students rant immediately came to mind. The content is definitely not compelling but it is one of those videos you have to view. When Alexandera Wallace posted her rant on Asian people in the library on Youtube, her Internet video blew up. Her racist rant and terribly inconsiderate words toward Japan’s earthquake and tsunami victims lead to her video to spread across the nation in just hours. I found the video on Barstoolsports.com just about four hours after the video was posted and by the end of the day nearly everyone that I know had seen the video.
I believe the video went viral due to the content of the video and the relation to the people of Japan. American bloggers and news sources love to show content that is racist. As shown in the Shirky book with the Trent Lott story of the senator from Mississippi, when he gave a pro-confederate speech at a birthday party in 2002. It seems in today's society when a racist comment is made or just a comment about race it is almost always played on news channels or shown on blogs around the world. No matter if it is in sports, politics, or just a girl making a Youtube video while sitting at her apartment, if race is involved it will be viewed by many people.
The Alexandra Wallace video went viral in a matter of hours. I think the video would have went viral at any point due to the content of what she said, but when she brought in the comments made about Japan she was just asking for the video to be played around the world. Many people think that a video they make will never go viral but as we have learned in class and through the Shirky book it is becoming more and more easy for people around the world to share information and share videos. This must come across a persons mind whenever posting something on the Internet and many like Wallace forget this key component and get burned by the speed that data travels these days.
